LUCÍA AGUAIS

New York-based multidisciplinary artist. She has combined her formal education in art with self-taught practice and insatiable curiosity. A crafter at heart, Lucía developed a unique style by blending painting with needlework crafts to create abstract art. In her work, Lucía uses needlework or so-called women’s craft alongside traditional mediums to emphasize the importance of textile crafts throughout history. Because thread holds everyone’s lives together literally and figuratively. If you don't believe her, just turn your shirt inside out—you'll see!

ARTIST STATEMENT

I didn't always think about how beautiful the world me was until something threatened that beauty, like a pandemic.

I invite you to be more present, enjoy more sunrises and sunsets, slow down and smell the flowers, and not take anything or anyone for granted. Approach every day with curiosity. Soon you'll come to realize that my paintings are colorful magical moments and lighthearted memories.
I use acrylics because they dry quickly and I’m a fast talker, inks for emphasis and rhythm, 3D textures to create references, and glitter to add sparkle. Last but not least needlework because thread holds our lives together literally and figuratively if you don’t believe me just turn your shirt inside out—you’ll see!
